Catholic school loses case against homosexual teacher

The legal case between a Catholic school and a homosexual teacher has come to an end after 7 years in court

In 2014, a teacher from Trentino was denied a renewal of her contract as a teacher at a Catholic school because of her sexual orientation. Now, in 2021, about seven years later, the Supreme Court has put an end to this case, rejecting the appeal filed by the school itself.

The teacher in question, after the non-renewal of her contract, had started a lawsuit against the Catholic Institute suspecting that the non-confirmation was due to the fact that she was homosexual. From that moment, the legal battle between the teacher and the Catholic school began.

On 7 March 2017, the Court of Appeal of Trento issued a sentence in favour of the teacher, awarding her €30,000 in moral damages and €13,329.00 in financial damages.

Now the Labour section of the Supreme Court has rejected the appeal presented by the Catholic Institute and as announced by the teacher’s lawyer, Alexander Schuster: ” the labour section has held that the freedom of teaching of a religious body does not constitute carte blanche to discriminate openly against people”.
