Germany, bishop authorizes blessings to gay couples

New rift of the German Catholic Church with Rome

It is an unprecedented move made by Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann, who in a pastoral letter addressed to his priests, gave his approval for blessings of gay couples and not only them: “Blessing celebrations for people who love each other.

A decision that of German Bishop Wiesemann comes after the German Synodal Way (March 2023) which by a majority dl 93% had said yes to the possibility of “blessings for people who love each other.”

A decision in stark contrast to the position of the Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith, which had previously stated that “it is not licit to impart a blessing to relationships or partnerships, even stable ones, that involve a sexual practice outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman.

Put, priests must bless only unions consecrated to God between a man and a woman.

In his letter to his priests, Bishop Wiesemann reassured them that there will be no sanctions against them if they choose to celebrate these blessings; an office will be set up – within the diocese itself – where couples can turn.

This is a decision that certifies more and more the rift between the German Catholic Church and the Vatican.
