Rejection of DDL Zan: Democracy takes to the streets in its defence

The first protest rallies in defence of DDL Zan, less than 24 hours after its rejection by the Senate

The first demonstrations in defence of DDL Zan were held in Milan and Rome, not even 24 hours after the approval of the infamous ‘cut-off’ – which definitively rejected the original text of DDL Zan – and the unworthy spectacle of right-wing Senators who, with chants, shouts and stadium cheering, celebrated their homotransfobia and their abilism (discrimination against the disabled). Unworthy scenes for representatives of the State and of all Italian citizens, but unfortunately for us, politics has turned into stadium cheering and our representatives into violent hooligans.

The Milanese flash mob at the Arco della Pace was attended by about 10,000 people – according to the organizers’ estimates – all sitting on the ground to denounce what happened in the Senate and strongly affirm the need for a law against homotransfobia and ableism. The demonstration was organized by Arcigay Milano, I Sentinelli di Milano and Coordinamento Arcobaleno.

What happened in the Senate is a disgrace!” said Fabio Pellegatta, President of CIG Arcigay Milano.

Luca Paladini – spokesperson for I Sentinelli di Milano – said: ”Perhaps the responsibility of those who have once again denied a law of civilization is not clear enough. They did not realize how homophobic they are. There is a piece of the Senate of the Republic that has played other games within the DDL Zan”.

As reported by La Repubblica, Paladini also lashed out at Senator Matteo Renzi – founder of Italia Viva – who was in Saudi Arabia at the time of the historic vote in the Senate.

He said: “There are other people who go to Saudi Arabia, a country where a homosexual ends up in jail just for being homosexual.

While in Rome, a sit-in was held in Via San Giovanni in Laterano, the capital’s ‘Gay Street’.

This is the real country, the one made up of many boys and girls, of families that cry out against the shame of those who rejoiced in Parliament for the cancellation of a law of civilization. You cannot oppose this tide, it will submerge you,” Senator Bruno Astorre, secretary of the Lazio Democratic Party, wrote on Facebook. Also, present was a delegation from +Europa with Benedetto Della Vedova (National Secretary), Riccardo Magi (President) and Rita Di Sano (Member of the Secretariat).

And they will not be the only ones, in fact, many others have been organised in different Italian cities, for example tomorrow in Cagliari at 3 p.m., in front of the T-Hotel, there will be a demonstration in favour of the DDL Zan, which will be attended also by the deputy Alessandro Zan – first signatory of the Law – and even if the DDL Zan has been rejected, the war continues.
