Sardinia opens up to LGBT+ tourism

Sardinia is preparing to become the new Mikonos as far as LGBT+ tourism is concerned

It is estimated that LGBT+ tourism in Sardinia could be worth around 83 million euros a year. This is according to estimates of possible revenue from ‘Rainbow’ tourism presented by the ‘Baa Bà’ social promotion association for the ‘Sardinia Friendly’ project proposed by Michele Pipia (President of the ‘Baa Bà’ association). This project aims to offer various tourism services dedicated to gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.

LGBT+ tourism is worth 8.3 billion euros in Europe and around 200 billion dollars worldwide. We have made an estimate, and already in recent years there has been considerable interest in Sardinia.

The aim, according to Michele Pipia, would be to aim for at least 1% of European tourism, which would be worth 83 million euro.

Little by little, Sardinia is opening up more and more to ‘Rainbow’ tourism and in fact, on 3 and 5 June next, the GLTA World Tour will take place – for the first time on Sardinian soil – in which 80 athletes of different nationalities will compete in around 100 single and double competitions.

We can say that Sardinia could have what it takes to compete with the Greek island of Mikonos, which has always been a destination for international LGBT+ tourism.
