Greece moving toward the recognition of egalitarian marriage

The new center-right government will make the battle to recognize egalitarian marriage its own

On June 25 and 26, Greeks went to the polls for the renewal of the Hellenic Parliament. From the votes, outgoing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the center-right ‘New Democracy‘ party, was reconfirmed.

Same-sex marriage will happen at some point and it is part of our strategy,Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during an interview with Bloomberg.

The commitment to the Greek LGBTQIA+ community by the center-right ‘New Democracy’ led coalition is not recent. In fact, in 2021, a committee drafted a national strategy to improve the civil rights of LGBTQIA+ people.

Among the initiatives taken by the Kyriakos Mitsotakis-led government in the last Legislature were the lifting of the ban on gay people donating blood and then the prohibition against sex normalization surgery on intersex children.

Same-sex civil unions in Greece were approved in 2015, and in 2016 (thanks to a Constitutional Court ruling) it is possible to have one’s gender reassigned other than one’s birth gender at the National Registry, even without undergoing surgery.

In the Rainbow Index ranking, Greece ranks 13th out of 49 nations surveyed on LGBTQIA+ civil rights.
